2023 Emmerson Cup Final - report

Ashbrow Garage - 134 for 6
Lindley Liberal Club - 77 all out

Ashbrow Garage won by 57 runs

This years final was held at Rastrick Cricket Club on Sunday 13th August, and was a clash between the teams that were, at the time, top of Sections 1 & 2 respectively - Ashbrow Garage & Lindley Liberal Club.

Ashbrow won the toss and chose to bat.

In spite of losing Ian Holt early, they got off to an excellent start with some powerful run scoring from Dale Winterbottom (44) and Cody Parr (35). They both fell to Kyle Adamson (who finished as the pick of the Lindley bowlers on 3 for 28).

Lindley kept going well in the field, with some excellent fielding, but Ashbrow ground out further runs down the order and finished with a challenging 134 for 6 off their 15 overs.

In reply, Lindley struggled from the off and lost wickets on a regular basis.

Oli Read top scored with 18 early on, and this was supplemented by some lower order runs from Omar Hussain (12) and Eoin Doran (17).

However it was the bowling of Ashbrow that prevailed with Dave Berry taking 3 for 11 and Max Berry 3 for 20. They were well supported by Bradley Sylvester (2 for 9) and Wayne Swift (2 for 17).

Lindley finished on 77 all out after 12.2 overs, which resulted in a victory for the Section 1 side by an impressive 57 runs.

This was Ashbrow’s 4th Emmerson Cup title, their first since 2018.

Man on the match, for his outstanding bowling figures of 3 for 11, was Dave Berry of Ashbrow Garage.

2022 Emmerson Cup Final - report

Walkers Arms - 154 for 7
Scholes Chapelgaters - 155 for 6

Scholes Chapelgaters won by 4 wickets

Chapelgaters won the toss and elected to field - from the start Louis Sykes was out for blood, dismissing the opening batsman Ryan Adams on the 3rd ball and Jack Roberts on the 4th, popping the ball up for an easy catch by Moorhouse.

Walkers started to make inroads off the bowling of Boreham before Louis Sykes returned to dispatch Crain Horner LBW for 2. The bowling, but in particular fielding, was tight and whilst Walkers played classy shots they were forever finding the fielder.

Chapelgaters were sharp but Walkers dug in with Illingworth hitting a fabulous 50 before being caught off the bowling of Firth for 51 - he was ably supported by J Longmore, who finally went for 32 off the bowling of Knight.

It was a heated performance by both sides but Chapelgaters appeared to have the upper hand with the fielding - with good placing and fast/fluid performances.

The bar was set by Walkers at 154 and the gauntlet caste.

Sykes then showed his skill with the bat, hitting 34 before being dismissed by Longmore. He was partnered with Moorhouse and together they made a significant dint in the run chase with Moorhouse succumbing to the bowling of Horner.

Chapelgaters seemed to find the gaps and punished Walkers with their ball placing and with missed catching opportunities they started to take hold. Walkers were not done yet though and weren’t going to let them have it all their own way with Horner dispatching Bradley for 1 and Knight for 19. Savile stepped up to hit a 6 off Longmore before he was as quickly dismissed with a catch by Johnson off Longmore. The strategy regarding the field placing and movement may have rattled Chapelgaters but Parr was having none of it and settled himself to hit the winning 6 over the clubhouse roof to seal the match.

The event went well and was superbly supported by family and friends and the general cricketing family.

2021 Emmerson Cup Final - report

Oldham Lions - 163 for 5
Stainland - 138 for 5

Oldham Lions won by 25 runs

On an overcast but warm afternoon at Almondbury, Oldham Lions won the toss and chose to bat. They lost 2 quick wickets but, from 5 for 2, the next partnership propelled them to a challenging score. Batting from the 2nd over until the last, Zain Lodhi accumulated 98 with a combination of some big hitting and manoevering of the ball around the field. Stainland did have their chances with Lodhi dropped twice during his innings. Small contributions came from other batters and they finished their 15 overs on 163 for 5. For Stainland, Neil Gill took 2 for 37.

Stainland started steadily but, chasing 11 runs per over, were always just behind the rate. The big over or two that they needed to put real pressure on never came, despite a fighting 54 from Ben Wells. They finished 25 runs shy at 138 or 5.

For his batting performance, 1 for 41 with the ball and his excellent fielding, Zain Lodhi was awarded the Man of the Match award by our President, Peter Bottomley.

Overall a very entertaining match with plenty of runs scored and some very good fielding all round.

2020 Emmerson Cup Final - report

Stainland - 58 all out
Ashbrow Garage - 42 all out

Stainland won by 16 runs

As had been the case for the Priestley Cup final earlier in the day, it appeared conditions remained in the bowlers favour. As a result, Stainland won the toss and decided to try to get runs on the board.

Scoring remained difficult throughout and it was a real struggle to put decent runs on the board. Uttley top scored with 11 and Stainland finally managed to get to 58, albeit they did not bat the full 15 overs. For Ashbrow Garage the main damage came from Dave Berry (3 for 9) and Rob Lucas (3 for 23).

Unlike the earlier final a relatively low 58 proved a more difficult proposition for the chasing team. Wickets fell at regular intervals with no Ashbrow batsman getting to double figures. There were impressive bowling returns for Pete Lombard (3 for 10), Paul Carter (2 for 10) and Clayton Smith (3 for 7) with Ashbrow finally being dismissed 16 runs short on 42.

A low scoring match, but plenty of excitement and a worthy finale to the 2020 season.

2019 Emmerson Cup Final - report

  • Scholes Chapelgaters - 87 for 9
  • Thompson Cooling - 90 for 4

Thompson Cooling won by 6 wickets

Batting first, Chapelgaters got off to a terrible start losing a number of early wickets. From what looked like being a score of well under 50, they recovered to post 87 for 9, thanks to 36 from Paul Sharkey. The only other score in double figures was the 12 from Matt Hallworth. For Thompson Cooling, Dale Winterbottom took 2 for 7 and A Moore 2 for 11.

In their reply Thompson Cooling were never really troubled. 24 from Dale Winterbottom, and an unbeaten 21 from Dane Winterbottom saw them to their target with 3 overs to spare. For Chapelgaters, Richard Knight took 2 for 27.

2018 Emmerson Cup final – report

  • Ashbrow Garage – 204 for 5
  • Thompson Cooling – 95 for 7

Ashbrow Garage won by 109 runs

The showcase final, the Emmerson Cup, was between Section 1 Ashbrow Garage and the current Section 2 leaders, Thompson Cooling.
Ashbrow Garage won the toss and chose to bat. Whilst Thompson Cooling were weakened by a number of their team being absent, Ashbrow simply put them to the sword. Firstly Ian Holt scored 53 but he was upstaged by Man of the Match Cody Parr who hit 101 in a devastating example of hitting. His knock contained 41 scored off the bat in one over. They closed their 15 overs on a daunting 204 for 5.
Unfortunately Thompson Cooling were unable to chase down such a large total and fell behind the rate almost straight away. Tight bowling, and some brilliant fielding, saw them close on 95 for 7.

2017 Emmerson Cup Final - report

Stainland - 156 for 6
First Oldham - 162 for 4

First Oldham won by 6 wickets

The showpiece Evening League final was guaranteed a new winner as first time finalists First Oldham and Stainland battled it out on a gloriously sunny afternoon at Lascelles Hall Cricket Club.

First Oldham won the toss and inserted Stainland in the best of 15 overs match. On a good batting wicket Stainland scored a respectable total 156 for 6, with Peter Lombard top scoring on 63. For First Oldham the pick of their bowlers was Zain Lodhi, who took 3 wickets for 33 runs.

In reply First Oldham started strongly before losing two quick wickets. The defining partnership of the match then saw Zain Lodhi (76 not out) and Imran Lodhi (44) put First Oldham in a strong position. In spite of the latter falling close to the end of the run chase, First Oldham won the game with two sixes from Zain Lodhi and ten balls to spare on 162 for 4.

Zain Lodhi was awarded the Man of the Match award for his brilliant all round performance in scoring 76 not out and taking 3 for 33.
